Graduate Students
I am always looking for motivated graduate students who are enthusiastic about exploring the role of haptic feedback in current and future human-computer interfaces. Research projects typically involve the ideation, prototyping and evaluation of novel interactive experiences that make use of haptic technologies. Prospective students should therefore have experience or a strong interest in haptics, human-computer interaction (HCI) and the following areas:
- Ideation: Brainstorming, design thinking, sketching and other creative techniques to develop ideas for novel uses of haptic technologies in human-computer interfaces.
- Prototyping: Programming and hardware design to prototype exciting applications of haptic technologies in interactive contexts.
- Evaluation: Qualitative and quantitative user research techniques to evaluate the resulting interactive experience or learn about human haptic perception.
Whenever possible, projects can be tailored to the skills and interests of the student. Students with little hardware design experience, for example, may use commercial haptic devices with easy-to-use APIs or learn to create simple haptic hardware with a platform such as Arduino. Students with a background in electrical or mechanical engineering, on the other hand, may be given the opportunity to develop their own haptic hardware.
To apply, send me an email with (1) your CV, (2) a transcript of your grades, and (3) a statement of your research interests. Please clearly state why you would like to join my research group, and more specifically why you are interested in haptics and human-computer interaction. A generic email that could have been sent to any professor is unfortunately likely to go unanswered.
Note that while ETS is a French-speaking university, proficiency in French is not required for graduate studies. Please see here for more details about graduate programs at ETS.
Current Openings
I am currently looking for Master's or Ph.D. students for several projects, including the projects below. Please contact me to inquire about other project opportunities or to propose your own project related to haptics or human-computer interaction (HCI).
Embodied Haptics | This project will investigate different solutions to produce haptic feedback through clothing and wearable devices (e.g., vibration and electrovibration), and explore applications in different contexts (e.g., AR/VR, ubiquitous computing). | PhD, Master's (thesis or project) |
Haptics of Things | This project will investigate different solutions to produce haptic feedback on everyday objects (e.g., vibration and electrovibration), and explore applications in different contexts (e.g., AR/VR, ubiquitous computing). | PhD, Master's (thesis or project) |
Haptic Symphony | This project will explore novel user experiences made possible by the synchronized use of several haptic devices in our hands (graspables), on us (wearables) and around us (everyday objects). | PhD, Master's (thesis or project) |
Haptics + Eyetracking | This project will explore novel user experiences made possible by the combination of haptics with eyetracking (Fove VR or Tobii Gaming). | Master's (project) |
Midair Haptics | This project will explore different applications of midair haptics by ultrasound (Ultrahaptics). | Master's (project) |
Undergraduate Students
I am always looking for motivated undergraduate students who are interested in learning about haptic technologies and human-computer interaction (HCI). Students in software, information technology, electrical, or mechanical engineering can all contribute to ongoing research projects.
To apply, send me an email with (1) your CV, (2) a transcript of your grades, and (3) a description of the type of work that you would like to do.
Current Opportunities
See below for a partial list of projects available for undergraduate students. It may also be possible for undergraduate students to contribute to the projects listed above in collaboration with graduate students.
Equipment Integration | I'm looking for an undergraduate or graduate student who will help me bring online recently acquired hardware such as VR/AR headsets, motion capture sensors, and haptic devices. Your task will be to set up, test and get different devices ready for use in our research projects. | Undergrad (or grad) |
Student Projects | Are you interested in using haptics in your project for a student club or a class? I may be able to provide hardware and support. | Undergrad |
Capstone Projects (PFE) | Are you interested in doing a capstone project (PFE) that involves haptics or human-computer interaction? I may be able to supervise your project and suggest interesting topics. | Undergrad |
Student Challenges | Several conferences offer the opportunity for students to participate in haptics- or HCI-related challenges. Recent examples include Asia Haptics 2018's Student Challenge in Automotive Haptics and UIST 2018's Student Innovation Contest. Contact if you would like my support for an upcoming student challenge. | Undergrad |
